Apps used for this shot

I love Portrait Mode to take close-up shots of Ora. As with Portrait Lighting the results are not always perfect. That’s when I use Pixelmator.

Almost every instagram shot I posted was touched up with Pixelmator for iPhone. It’s such a powerful and yet simple to use app.

So let’s have a look at the following photo taken with Portrait Mode:

At first the result seems pretty good right? But take a closer look at the edges. I noticed this problem fairly often when the blurred background has a lot of detail, like here the leaves. You’ll get those janky edges like those highlighted in the following image:

Now with Pixelmator it’s pretty easy to refine those spots. I use the smudge tool with more or less 15% and just blur the edges on those places. It’s a lot of trial and error and undo and zoom out. But within a few minutes you’ll get something like this:

Now notice how smooth those edges look. Much better than the original. I love touching up small details like these to achieve a cleaner and overall better looking photo.

You can find more of Ora and me on instagram and if you have questions or feedback you can write us a message there too.
